Stop Naming Your Competitors in Pitches

THE GAP POSITIONING FRAMEWORK

THE PRINCIPLE

Don't position against competitors. Position against the problem.

When you name a competitor, you send the client to research them. When you describe the gap in the market — you become the natural solution.

THE 3-PART STRUCTURE

PART 1 — NAME THE GAP (not the competitor)

Instead of:

"Unlike Developer X, we offer post-handover payment plans."

Say:

"Most options in this market require full settlement at handover — which puts enormous financial pressure on buyers at exactly the wrong moment."

PART 2 — MAKE THE GAP FEEL REAL

Don't just state the problem — make them feel the cost of it.

"That restructuring pressure is why a lot of buyers end up selling early, or stretching into positions they didn't plan for."

PART 3 — PRESENT YOUR SOLUTION AS THE ANSWER TO THE GAP

"We built our payment structure specifically to remove that pressure. You complete, you're stable, and the investment performs the way you intended it to."

THE RESULT

The market becomes the problem. Your product becomes the solution. No competitor got mentioned. No curiosity was sent their way. All attention stays on you.

ONE RULE

If you catch yourself about to say "unlike" or "better than" — stop.

Reframe to:

"The challenge most buyers face is..."

Every time.
